  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Kim Mcallister -- Was Heinlein 12 when he wrote this? : Yikes. One of the worst books I've ever read. Horny old man gets brain transplanted into horny young woman, who happens to be his secretary (after she is murdered.) And then her spirit happens to stay in the same brain, so there are TWO of them in there. Then he/she goes and gets pregnant using the old geezer's frozen sperm. They spend the entire book either kissing or screwing EVERY ONE of the old geezers business partners, security guards, or spewing non-stop cutesy-wootsy, icky sweet, double innuendos within their own brain. Oh yeah, there is a dystopian society out there, but brief detailed descriptions of the state of the country/world really have little to do with the story. Once it was established that the USA society was a crime-ridden mess, nothing else mattered. This could have been funny, could have been a powerful look at sexuality, could have been a story about ethics, but all it is is an amateur sex romp with no sex. It is so bad, I had to look up the ending on Wikipedia because I was going to stop reading. I'd be embarrassed to have this published under MY name. I guess Heinlein was ill at the time. But some think this is his best work! Oh hell no. Save your time, save yourself. Pass this one up, ( Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Burt Walker, Author -- A book about sex without any sex : This has to be one of the strangest books I've ever read. It has been a long time since I've read any Heinlein, but a friend recommended it and since I had not read it, I had to give it a try. On the surface, it seems like this is a book that speaks incessantly about sex but has no sex scenes. While this is true, the book is about so much more than that. Reading it 47 years after it was published, revealed more about the author's brilliance than it would have had I read it in 1970. His prophetic ideas about technology as well as modern culture are quite simply amazing. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Pacific Northwest customer -- The Grandmaster of Science Fiction : Need I say more? ( Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Paul S. Person -- Not Very Good, Especially for Heinlein : This is a book which turns out, at the end, to be about ... nothing. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from A Wagner Fan -- Some of Heinlein's Best Extrapolation : This is the latest in multiple rereads of this novel. Commonn criticism holds that Heinlein's later writing is inferior to his earlier. I attribute that to how much he diverges from societal conventions. All through this reading I kept recognizing today's crazy world in Heinlein's fictional construct. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2019 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from christine lewis -- Most Memorable ending, phrases that stay with you : I read this as a girl, decades ago, and several of the phrases, such as 'tell it bang', stayed with me... It has the most memorable first chapters and amazing last few pages of any of Heinlein"'s books. The book is set in his future history, where Earth is pretty finished, with crime out of control, over population, widespread depletion of resources, and governments both intrusive and inefficient. Settlement of the Moon has begun, though, and the hero/heroine and his/her extended family finally join this. Unfortunately the book ends there, with a heart stopping conclusion . By that time we have spent too many pages in Heinlein's later works' fantasy territory : free love, free sex, nobody jealous, all relations loving and life enhancing, so that we end up with the extended family cum commune that does, actually, nothing at all. The sex is wonderfully '50s, as are the women, veils, sensationally curvy bodies, long legs, and body paint. Jane Russell would be great as Eunice, the heroine. As other reviews have mentioned, Heinlein is not great at female characters, with the exception of Friday, who is actually clever, in fact a genius. The heroine (I try to avoid spoilers here ) spends her time learning to be a woman, which means shopping, make up, yoga, seduction and finally a baby. In the background is a very , cynical and experienced old man, and at times the dialogue between the two is interesting, , but most of it is pretty yucky and should have been cut to ribbons. OK, so over long, short on content, but nevertheless ( Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mr. A. C. Dawe -- Another book bought as a replacement : My copy of this is/was a paperback, which is finally giving up the unequal struggle of having been read too often. Considering when this book was written, there are some frighteningly close parallels coming to pass in present reality:- No Go, areas for Police (so called 'dead' areas), and the most prestigious car available is a Rolls-Skoda - Who owns Rolls Royce these days and also owns Skoda.. well Volkswagen, so a Rolls Skoda is not far from the truth! • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Nick Keighley -- I Finally Read It : I've been hunting for this book for years. I've now read pretty much all of Heinlein's early stuff. I see why this one was so difficult to come by. It's pretty poor. It's a mono-idea book (man's brain transplanted into woman's body) and vehicle for Heinlein's wierder ideas (incest, sexuality, libitarianism) most of which long-term readers of him are tediously familiar with. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Cesce -- I loved it : I loved this book and have only just realised that I no longer have a copy (thanks to moving, etc.). I came onto Amazon to order another. After Time Enough for Love, it ties with Stranger for my favourite. However, Farnham's Freehold was the first Heinlein I read and that is definitely worth a look also. Read them all: he's thought provoking, innovative (for the time) and his characters are well-formed. And did I mention he's thought-provoking? ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 24, 2005 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Jane -- I'm glad I came across this - prescient : I'm glad I came across this - prescient, funny whilst tracing one man's journey as he has to inhabit a female body to preserve longevity. Thoughtful focus on gender. Goes well with Woman on the Edge of Time. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 4, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Five Stars : A1. Thanks. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 9, 2017 )
